Chapter I About the Founding Principal

A Heritage of Logic and Grace

I was born and raised in Yokohama — a city where different cultures and values quietly converge — and reared in a household where two worlds existed in measured harmony.

My father served as Director-General of the National Research Institute of Police Science, devoting his life to logic, discipline, and the pursuit of truth, and was honoured by His Majesty the Emperor of Japan. My mother, who began her career in the founding years of Japan Airlines, embodied the Japanese spirit of omotenashi and the most refined form of international hospitality.

Witnessing both, I came to recognise a single truth: true elegance is not a matter of appearance, but a manner of being, grounded in intellect.

This conviction is the origin of ICPA. By integrating a scientific perspective with Japan’s cultural sensibility, we have built a system through which one becomes a person naturally trusted in international society — and this system is what we know today as the ICPA methodology.

Chapter II My Perspective

Why I Analyse Protocol

ICPA is not a school that merely teaches manners. I regard protocol not as a set of forms to be memorised, but as a discipline through which the structure of human relationships may be understood.

The conduct of diplomats, executives, and leaders who operate on the world stage is never accidental; every gesture has its reason. To uncover the why and the how, and to render them into a form that can be reproduced — this has been my work.

I was not born a diplomat. Precisely for that reason, I have undertaken to unravel, one by one, the unwritten codes that govern international society, through rigorous international study and direct professional experience. The result is a body of work in which the unseen dynamics of social life have been distilled into a reproducible discipline that may be taught, refined, and mastered.

Chapter III My Mission

The Logic of Elegance

What I wish to convey is the logic of elegance.

An intellectual foundation upon which one may stand with composure and confidence — in any country, in any position. With that foundation, one need not imitate another.

Those who acquire this logic cease to imitate; they become those who understand, choose, and lead.

Chapter VII The Philosophy of Founding

Founding Vision

I founded The International Protocol Academy of Japan with a single, unwavering conviction: that in our globalising world, the greatest barrier between people is not language, nor power, nor cultural difference — but the absence of mutual respect and genuine understanding.

Through my international study and professional practice, I have repeatedly witnessed how cultural misunderstanding, unspoken expectation, and the most subtle differences in conduct can either nurture trust or, unnoticed, undermine it altogether.

In diplomacy, in business, in medicine, and in international cooperation, outcomes are rarely determined by expertise or technique alone. What ultimately decides them is how the other party is made to feel — whether they sense themselves respected, understood, and safe.

Japan possesses a philosophy of conduct refined over centuries: rooted in dignity, harmony, and the most attentive consideration for others. Yet its value remains insufficiently visible within contemporary international society — and at times, its essence is overlooked even within Japan itself.

ICPA was founded to bridge that distance. By integrating the wisdom of Japanese culture with Western academic frameworks, behavioural science, and international protocol standards, we offer to those at the forefront of society a systematic and intellectually rigorous approach to human relations.

Our purpose is not to teach surface manners. It is to cultivate professionals capable of embodying their culture with integrity, representing their institutions with grace and authority, and building cross-border trust through quiet confidence.

Chapter VIII A Conviction from the Outset

Protocol as Applied Human Science

Since founding The International Protocol Academy of Japan, I have had the privilege of instructing diplomats, embassy officials, corporate executives, medical professionals, and those who aspire to make their work international.

Through more than twenty-five years of international study, teaching, and direct professional practice across cultures, one principle has remained unchanged in my conviction: that at the centre of every successful negotiation, organisation, and international partnership stands, invariably, a single thing — the human being.

Expertise, authority, and institutional influence are, of course, indispensable. Yet they alone are never enough. Trust, collaboration, and lasting outcomes are built upon personal presence, cultural intelligence, and behavioural mastery — the precision and reproducibility of conduct.

From its inception, ICPA has been designed as an academy that regards protocol not as form or etiquette alone, but as Applied Human Science: a discipline and a craft through which the values of respect, dignity, and cultural understanding may be translated into the lived practice of leadership.
