The Yamato Elegance | Japanese Protocol, Culture & Etiquette | ICPA Japan
Prologue The Most Comprehensive Programme

If you would truly
master Japan

Many courses in the world claim to teach Japanese etiquette. Few teach the why. Fewer still teach the depth of history, philosophy, and spiritual heritage from which every gesture, every bow, every silence in Japanese culture is born.

The Yamato Elegance is for those who would truly master Japan — not as surface etiquette, but as a complete education in Japanese culture, history, spirit, and refined conduct. The programme is academically structured, drawing from Shinto, Buddhism, the Way of the Warrior (Bushido), the Way of Tea (Sado), and the philosophy that has shaped one of the world’s most refined civilisations over more than a millennium.

For executives, diplomats, scholars, and cultural connoisseurs who seek a deeper understanding of Japan — for the harmonious communication with Japanese counterparts, the appreciation of Japan’s enduring soft power, and the cultivation of the qualities our age most requires: harmony, spiritual depth, and a truly global mind.

ICPA is the only institution in Japan accredited by LEPSW (Leading Etiquette and Protocol Schools of the World), in distinguished partnership with the United Kingdom’s pre-eminent etiquette and protocol institution, The English Manner. Admission to The Yamato Elegance is by selection.

Chapter I The Ways of Japan

The “Ways” through which
Japan reveals herself

Japan’s refinement does not arise from a single discipline. It is born from layers of “Ways” () — paths of practice through which generations have cultivated body, mind, and spirit. The Yamato Elegance begins with the academic study of these foundational Ways.

Shintō
— The Way of the Gods

Reverence for nature and the divine. The animist worldview, the spirit of purity, and the philosophical foundation that underlies every Japanese ceremony, custom, and gesture of refinement.

Budō
— The Way of the Warrior

The cultivation of character through disciplined training of body and mind. The principles of Bushido, the ethos that begins with courtesy and ends with courtesy, and the spirit of dignified discipline that shapes Japanese conduct.

Sadō
— The Way of Tea

The aesthetics of wabi-sabi, the spirit of ichi-go ichi-e (one encounter, one chance), the philosophy of hospitality. Through Tea, the unique Japanese sense of beauty and refined hospitality reveals itself.

Etiquette is not mere politeness
It is the elegance born of spirit and intellect

Chapter III The Curriculum

An academic
curriculum of Japan

Beyond surface etiquette: the philosophical foundations, the historical context, and the cultural meanings beneath every gesture. Each module is taught with the academic rigour of a serious university course, structured for executives and connoisseurs alike.

Module I

The Spiritual Foundations of Japan

Shinto, Buddhism, and Confucianism — the three sources that have shaped Japanese consciousness. The eight million gods, the reverence for nature, the philosophy of purity, the spirit of harmony — Japan’s distinctive worldview as a structured academic study.

Module II

Bushido & Japanese Ethics

The Way of the Warrior. The seven virtues of Bushido: justice (gi), courage (yu), benevolence (jin), respect (rei), sincerity (makoto), honour (meiyo), and loyalty (chugi). Nitobe’s Bushido and its contemporary significance for the conduct of modern executives.

Module III

The Way of Tea & Refined Hospitality

The philosophy of wabi-sabi. Ichi-go ichi-e — “one encounter, one chance”. Wa-kei-sei-jaku — harmony, respect, purity, tranquility. The structure of the tea gathering, the bearing within the tea room, and the aesthetic philosophy at the heart of Japanese hospitality.

Module IV

Omotenashi & Japanese Social Conduct

The distinctive Japanese philosophy of omotenashi (hospitality). The art of anticipation, the consideration that does not impose, the beauty of ma (interval). The forms of kaiseki dining, the culture of sake, and the seasonal rhythms of Japanese social life.

Module V

Gift Culture & Seasonal Rites

The unwritten codes of Japanese gift-giving: chugen, seibo, seasonal greetings, ceremonial gifts. The forms of celebration and mourning, the rites of passage. The why beneath each custom, taught as an academic discipline.

Module VI

The Aesthetics of Space & Dress

Bearing within the tatami room, the conventions of seating order, the handling of fusuma and shoji. The history of the kimono and the form of dressing. The harmony of form and spirit at the heart of Japan’s traditional spaces and attire.

Module VII

Japan in the Global Age — Soft Power & Harmony

The qualities our age requires: harmony, spiritual depth, and refined global mind. Japan’s soft power — the cultural philosophy that has shaped one of the world’s most influential modern civilisations. The application of Japanese wisdom to the conduct of executive life upon the international stage.

Chapter V Voices of Excellence

A voice from
our community

A reflection from a graduate of The Yamato Elegance.

One of the most significant transformations I have experienced through this programme has been a deeper understanding of Japanese culture, communication, and the importance of consideration towards others in daily life.

What I valued most in this programme was the professionalism and kindness of my teacher and the ICPA team. I always felt supported. I also greatly valued the amount and depth of information provided throughout the programme. I learned not only about etiquette itself, but also about the cultural background.
