I would like to begin the graduation ceremony for Takayuki Sugimoto. Congratulations on your graduation from the International Gentlemen’s Studies.
“Thank you.”
Would you like to say a few words?
“Absolutely.”
Please tell us why you decided to take this course.
I first attended a five-hour intensive international education course taught by Murata Sensei. At that time, my senior colleague, Dr. Yamashita, recommended that I join the full programme.
I found the initial course extremely insightful, but I didn’t yet consider enrolling myself.
However, after participating in various ICPA events, I began to feel that this might be the opportunity I needed to change my current situation. On 5 February 2021, I attended the Dance Dinner, and the atmosphere there truly moved me. I felt almost certain that I could transform myself from that point onwards. That experience compelled me to take the course.
As a leader, I am often in a position where I must ask others to take action, which naturally requires me to lead by example. I hoped that by enrolling in this programme, I could inspire others to engage more confidently, and also overcome my own deep-seated insecurities.
What did you gain from the course?
At first, I found it enjoyable because we began with history, and I felt as though I was rediscovering knowledge I had once learned.
But the course went far beyond that—it taught me how to present myself, how to manage first impressions, and how to conduct myself in various situations. These became regular topics of reflection and discussion.
About two-thirds of the way through, I began to notice a change in my awareness and behaviour in daily life. I realised that I was evolving from within.
While I’ve always had an interest in history, the parts of the course that left the deepest impression on me were the ones I initially lacked confidence in—such as personal colour analysis and posture. These areas forced me to confront aspects of myself I had avoided. That confrontation sparked real personal growth.
This course isn’t just for beginners—it delves quite deeply into these subjects. Even at the entry level, the content is rich and substantial, and I believe the foundational mindsets and values I’ve acquired will prepare me well for the intermediate and advanced levels.
How do you plan to apply the skills you’ve acquired?
I now find myself regularly reflecting on my behaviour and mindset, and I want to apply this self-awareness to my daily life.
The beginner course focused on building a strong foundation—on preparedness—so I feel ready to move toward more practical application. That’s why I’m considering enrolling in the intermediate course next.
Who would you recommend this course to?
Honestly, I think it would benefit anyone with the ambition to grow or move forward in life. But I would most strongly recommend it to people who currently lack confidence or who tell themselves, “I’m not capable of much anyway.” For them, this course could be a turning point.
“Absolutely. Self-confidence is a significant factor. It’s something you can’t see, but I believe it’s incredibly important.”
What kind of community would you like to study in?
The ICPA host team is made up of individuals from diverse backgrounds, yet they share a common purpose. The same goes for the students—we may all have different stories, but we’re heading in the same direction. I hope we can continue learning together as companions on the same great vessel.
“That’s wonderful! Learning at ICPA is The Great Voyage of Learning!”
Would you recommend this course despite the cost?
Some people might hesitate due to the tuition fees—I felt the same way initially. It wasn’t that the cost was unaffordable, but I did think twice about the investment.
Looking back now, however, I truly believe the value far exceeded the price. I actually took the course thirteen times. While each session may be labelled as two or three hours, the depth of learning was far greater. When I reflect on how much I’ve grown, the return on investment is undeniable. It’s been incredibly worthwhile.
So even if someone feels hesitant about the fee, I would tell them: the rewards and transformation are so profound that it’s well worth it.
“Your life is still long, and in the blink of an eye, you’ll reach the half-century mark. You’re still in your thirties, aren’t you? I think it’s wonderful that you chose to take this course at a stage in life where you’re preparing to lead society. If more people like you take on leadership, I truly believe the world will become a better place.”
Thank you.
Let’s change the world together.
I look forward to working with you.
