Ms Rika Kinoshita: From Nervous Beginnings to Newfound Confidence – My ICPA Experience

From nervous beginnings to a deeper appreciation of international etiquette, one student shares how the ICPA Beginner Course helped her overcome uncertainty, embrace global manners, and shift her perspective on what true consideration means in communication.

“I would love to share this same excitement with many others.”

I currently work as a full-time employee, and over the past four years, the number of opportunities I’ve had to interact with people from overseas has steadily increased. Whether it’s through conferences or daily communication, I began to feel unsure about what to say, and how best to connect with people from other cultures.

So I started searching online for terms like “international education” and “international etiquette,” and that’s when I came across ICPA.

There were many schools out there teaching culture and manners, but something about ICPA stood out. I decided to attend their information session first — just to get a feel for it.

At the session, Murata-sensei explained that English has been essential in global communication for more than a decade, and that even a single greeting can open the door to real connection. That really resonated with me.

“You applied on the same day — such a decisive move.”
Yes, I did! I felt it was exactly what I needed, so I made the decision right away.

My First Steps into the Beginner Course

To be honest, I was extremely nervous at first. It was my first time attending such a course, and it was one-on-one — just me and the instructor.

It was also an intensive format, starting at 10am and continuing until evening. It was a lot — so much to remember and write down. But every day was filled with learning and discovery, and I found myself getting curious about more and more things.

“Compared to your first day, you look so much more energised now.”
Yes, I feel it too — I’ve definitely changed.

What Left the Strongest Impression

Among all the lessons, I particularly remember those on table manners and dress codes. But what fascinated me the most was actually the history behind etiquette.

We studied how concepts like chivalry came about, and how etiquette itself originated — from ancient Egypt to French court culture. Understanding the roots of these customs really helped me see them in a new light.

“Yes, the history part really is rich and fascinating.”

What I Gained from the Course

All the classes were dense, and there was so much I didn’t know before. But what stood out most to me was the realisation that etiquette isn’t something stiff or forced.

Rather, it’s about how we treat others with care. It’s about being considerate — paying attention so we don’t make others feel uncomfortable. Once I realised that, I stopped thinking of manners as rigid rules, and started viewing them as thoughtful communication. That shift in mindset has stayed with me.

Looking Ahead

Now that I’ve completed the beginner course, I’m continuing on to the intermediate level.
There’s still so much to learn — especially in English communication and global awareness. Right now, I want to keep absorbing, keep practising, and eventually, I’d love to be able to share this same kind of excitement and discovery with others — just as you do.

“That’s wonderful. I know your journey is just beginning — but let’s keep moving forward together.”
