Mrs Kaori Akutsu: Rediscovering Myself Through the Study of International Protocol

In many ways, I would recommend the course to a wide range of people, even those who don't have a concrete idea that they want to become an executive, to acquire a deeper level of knowledge and education, because I think we are going to live in an international age.

This time, I had the rare opportunity to meet state guests. However, I realised just how unprepared I was — both in knowledge and in how to interact appropriately. The sense of embarrassment and lack of confidence I felt pushed me to take this course, in the hope of overcoming those feelings and equipping myself with the proper understanding.

In today’s world, the internet is flooded with information — not all of it accurate. I wanted to develop the ability to distinguish truth from misinformation, especially when it comes to cultural etiquette. I truly believe this course allows me to do just that.

Since becoming a mother, I often found myself prioritising everything and everyone else, gradually losing sight of my own future and sense of self. Through this course, I have learned many practical and relevant lessons — from dress codes to social behaviour — that have helped me become more aware of how I present myself. I now pay greater attention to my posture, attire, and overall appearance, even for something as simple as going out for groceries.

Having children led me to put myself second, but this course gave me the opportunity to rediscover and realign with who I am — both inside and out. For that, I am deeply grateful.

When I first enrolled, I assumed that international protocol meant focusing solely on global rules and formalities. However, what struck me most was how the instructor, Murata-sensei, consistently drew comparisons between Japanese protocol and international standards. Every lecture offered meaningful insights that went beyond the surface — exploring not just the “what,” but the “why” behind cultural customs and etiquette. It was this depth of cultural understanding that I found most enriching.

One memorable moment was during the lecture on dress codes. The idea that we must be able to clearly express our preferences when ordering bespoke clothing struck me profoundly. It made me realise that true refinement begins with self-awareness — a key quality in the upper class.

Initially, I imagined that Murata-sensei might be quite strict and that her lectures would be mostly one-sided. To my surprise, she was warm, approachable, and always open to discussion. Her teaching style was highly interactive and dialogue-driven, which made the sessions all the more engaging. She listened attentively, even to the smallest concerns, while maintaining excellent pacing throughout. Her timing and balance between listening and moving forward were simply masterful — a true sign of a professional.

International protocol is essential for those preparing to live or work abroad, but I also believe it would be invaluable for family members accompanying them. When families learn together, they grow in the same direction, creating a shared understanding. I think it would be wonderful for adult children to take the course together with their parents. Opportunities like this are rare, and I highly recommend taking the course as a family — it will be time well spent.

If your children also learn international protocol and global manners, the entire family will be elevated. Conversations will deepen, mutual understanding will grow, and the household atmosphere will be enriched.

Though the course was short, it was incredibly well-structured and content-rich. Every minute was used efficiently, and I came away with knowledge I can apply immediately.

Even for those who do not aspire to become executives, I strongly recommend this course. We are now living in a truly global era, and the education offered here provides a deeper level of insight, understanding, and sophistication.

I am sincerely thankful to Murata-sensei for her kind guidance and for offering such a meaningful, eye-opening experience.

Thank you very much.
